Michael Tjalve brings 25 years of experience with AI, from applied science and research to tech sector AI product development and deep expertise in AI in humanitarian action. He previously served as Chief AI Architect at Microsoft Philanthropies and as Senior Advisor to the UN on AI in humanitarian action.

In 2024, he established Humanitarian AI Advisory to help humanitarian organizations and stakeholders understand how to harness the potential of AI while navigating its pitfalls. Michael is co-author of the SAFE AI Framework, which aims to promote the responsible and effective use of AI in humanitarian action.

Since 2009, Michael has been Assistant Professor at University of Washington where he teaches AI in the humanitarian sector and ethical innovation. He holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from University College London.

Michael is Co-founder of RootsAI Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to the benefits of AI for underrepresented languages and communities in ethical and culturally grounded ways, and to help preserve endangered languages and cultures.

Michael serves as Board Chair and technology advisor for Spreeha Foundation, an NGO whose mission is to improve access to quality healthcare and to empowering women and girls in underserved communities in Bangladesh.
